London New Tech - October
After being tipped off by a developer I'd been working with, I followed up on their recommendation and found my way to this month’s London New Tech. Not heard of it? Well, founder Alexander Lushnikov described it as a great event to ‘showcase new technology from London and around the world, followed by networking.’ And after my experience, I couldn’t agree more!
Recruiting in an industry that is rapidly changing means that unless you are witnessing the front line, you can never understand the true shifts of the market. Alexander adds that “we are a community of people who believe that tech is here to change the world in the 21st century”, if that doesn’t excite you then I don’t know what will!
Speaking to developers helps us to understand how they are challenging current technology, to create something bigger and better. Here are the 5 stand-out points from the evening and as a recruiter/ lover of all thing technical, my perspective to the mastermind’s projects.
As a man who's on a contract and is a lover of all things mobile, it's safe to say I burn through my allotted data allowance. Come half way through the month, I'm having to purchase more megabytes in order to stay on top of social media, the latest sports news and even sometimes my work email...
However, I, like many others never truly keep track of what my usage is, be that the amount of texts I send, the number of minutes I use, or the number of hilariously funny cat videos I just have to show my friends and family. As such, I get taken for a bit of a ride by my provider when it comes to my contract, and the amount I pay each month. That is until today... CTRLio is giving the power back to the consumer!
Through analysing your usage, these clever folk have now come up with a way to bring the very best deals to you, all in one place! It takes away the leg work, allowing you to see the cheapest deals that are going to save you money each month and cover all of your usage needs!
Another innovative idea presented, addressed a rising problem that many industries are encountering with their members. When attending events, particularly those where you're networking, making sure you're talking to the right people and introducing yourself to those who are looking to buy or sell, depending on what you need, can prove time consuming and tricky! Intros brilliant new app, described as being like the tinder of networking, allows you to focus in on the people you should be speaking with. Using complex, machine learning algorithms, Intros will scan your social media accounts and other sources to work out who else attending the same event, you need to speak with. Networking made a lot more efficient!
With a significant other in events management, this will be an application I will be keeping a close eye on. On a personal level, I hope this app will serve to make me and others in the recruitment industry more approachable. Will it be coming to a London New Tech Meeting soon?
We were also presented some exciting news from nom nom nom, after proving to be a huge success abroad they are now coming to the UK! Starting with London, nom nom nom provides students with a cheap efficient alternative to a takeaway. Using bulk ordering, and set delivery times, this service will allow students to explore local cuisines but for a fraction of the price! It's safe to say, I'm slightly envious that something similar wasn't around during my studies! Using your smart phone or tablet, students (and maybe others in the future) can access unique deals from a variety of sources, track their order and have their food delivered at a set time which suits them. Temperature tracking is also on nom nom nom’s radar, providing peace of mind to customers reassuring them that when their food arrives it will still be fresh and delicious!
Peer to peer insurance is Brollys take on turning the insurance market on its head! The way we can access insurance has changed, but the basic model is still the same... Until now! Whilst still in their early stages, what's being offered by brolly will allow customers greater levels of customisation and flexibility, meaning that you'll only ever pay for the cover you need, not what's included in the stock packages you would normally receive.
After a thoroughly informative and eye opening evening, my sights are firmly set on Novembers meet up. It’ll be great to see new, innovative and passionate folk championing their ideas in what promises to be another worthwhile evening out in Central London. The welcoming atmosphere and open ideas sharing format will be sure to keep me, and many others coming back again and again!
